General Information
In order to nominate students for the Intercollegiate Band, directors must be active/current members of the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA). If you are not currently a member, you can join or renew by visiting this link. If you have any issues or questions about membership, you can contact NAfME at 800-336-3768 or memberservices@nafme.org. For KMEA-related questions, contact the KMEA office at 859-626-5635.
All directors with accepted students must attend the KIB Director Breakfast/Annual Business Meeting on the Wednesday of KMEA week.
All directors must participate in the KIB Seating Auditions, either as a proctor or as judge.
All directors must attend and assist with KIB Rehearsals, as well as the Concert.
Nomination Procedures
Please adhere to the following procedures in order to submit student nominations:
- Please nominate only students who represent the finest in collegiate performance level.
- All nominated students should be able to fluently read and perform Grade V or VI literature.
- Directors may nominate up to 20% of their total wind band program personnel.
- All nominations must be submitted via the provided spreadsheet. If an Excel spreadsheet is preferred or required, please contact the KIB Coordinator.
- Nominations must be submitted in rank order (i.e., your strongest student overall, regardless of instrument, should be listed as your institution’s #1 nomination).
- Be specific when submitting instrument nominations (e.g., “alto saxophone” rather than simply “saxophone”). Note: piccolo players will be selected from nominated flute musicians.
- Before nominating students, please ensure that each student is available and committed to participate in the Intercollegiate Band during the Wednesday and Thursday of KMEA Week.
- Also make sure nominees are aware of any financial responsibilities associated with participation that will not be covered by the nominating institution, including KIB fees, housing, and/or meals.
- Finally, please verify that nominees will not face conflicts with other All-Collegiate ensembles (e.g., All-Collegiate Choir, All-Collegiate Jazz Band).
Nominations are due by the first Friday in November, 5pm. All eligible Kentucky University and College Band Directors should have received an email soliciting nominations. If you did not receive the email, please contact the KIB Coordinator or KMEA.
Participation Fee
There is a $40.00 participation fee for students selected to perform with the Kentucky Intercollegiate Band. KMEA will “bill” the director/institution who nominates the student. In some cases the institution pays the fee, in other cases the student pays it. Regardless, the fee must be paid and on file with the KMEA Office in Richmond prior to the event or the student may be prevented from participating.
Driving Directions
If you are using a navigation app, simply enter “Comstock Concert Hall” into the app. Parking at the School of Music is very limited, you will find some space at the Speed Building Garage. If driving to the Stadium for parking and then using a shuttle bus, enter “Papa Johns Stadium” into your navigation app. There is also street parking near the University, but that is difficult to obtain unless you arrive very early.
Below are specific driving directions if not using a navigation app.
